Description

This course teaches the theoretical and practical foundations for human computer interaction. It covers a wide overview of topics, techniques and approaches used for the design and evaluation of modern user interfaces.
The course covers the principles that underlie successful user interfaces, provides an overview of input and output devices and user interface types, and familiarizes students with the methods for designing and evaluating user interfaces. Students learn to critically assess user interfaces, to design user interfaces themselves, and to evaluate them in empirical studies.

Topics:

  • Fundamentals of human-computer interaction
  • User interface paradigms, input and output devices
  • Desktop & graphical user interfaces
  • Mobile user interfaces
  • Natural user interfaces
  • User-centered interaction design
  • Design principles and guidelines
  • Prototyping
  • Evaluation of user interfaces

Eligibility

This lecture replaces the UID lecture. Therefore students who successfully completed UID will not be allowed to take the lecture. Additionally, students who have previously taken a similar introduction to HCI course elsewhere will not be eligible to take the class.

Transfer of credit from UID 2016:

  • “I have successfully completed the exercises of UID 2016, but have not passed the final exam. Can I just write the exam?” Yes you can transfer your exercises from UID 2016 to HCI 2017, so you do not have to hand in exercises and project assignments a second time. In this case, we will grade your project assignment from UID 2016. This grade contributes 30% of your final grade of HCI 2017, while the final exam of HCI 2017 contributes 70%. In this case, fill in your details in this form no later than April 30, 2017.
  • “I have successfully completed the UID lecture in 2016. Can I transfer the credit to the new HCI lecture, and hence credit it as a core lecture?” Yes you can. You have to direct a written request to the examination board.

This lecture will be also offered in the next winter semester (WS 2017/18): This course is offered in the summer semester for the last time for reasons of backward-compatibility with the old media informatics curriculum. From next winter semester (winter 2017/18) onwards, this course will be offered in winter semesters. We therefore encourage you to consider taking this class in the coming winter semester.

Registration

Important: Deadline for the registration has passed and we do not accept anymore students. Please consider joining the course in winter semester.

You do not have to register for this lecture beforehand. Just come to the first lecture and then register for an exercise group on moodle on or before Friday, April 21. If you are a student of the computer science department: your user name and password for moodle is the same as the one you have received for the CS owncloud. If you are NOT a student of the computer science department and if you sure that you don’t have an account, then please fill the form at this link. If you have forgotten your password or not sure if you have an account or not, try this link to reset your password. Use your university email address. Give the system about 20mins to send your credentials. If you do not receive an email after that time, make sure you check your junk/spam email folder before requesting for a new account. If you have enrolled in more than one group (group of three), please indicate the groups that you want to be removed from by completing the form at this link.

Important: Later in the semester, a few weeks before the exam, you have to register for the exam on HISPOS. The registration must be made no later than one week before the exam.

Exam

Date Venue
Exam 14:30 to 16:00 Günter-Hotz-Hörsaal and Lecture Hall I in E2 5 (Mathematics)
Re-Exam 12th Oct, 2017 – 14:30 to 16:00 Physics Lecture Hall, building C6 4
